Ephesus in Turkey is one of the finest examples of a Roman town. It is not quite on the scale of Pompeii or Herculaneum but it is still pretty impressive. Among its sights is a enormous amphitheatre (or arena). During the performances, slaves and animals were moved around in tunnels ... the Roman version of backstage. This is probably the remains of one of those tunnels.
