Brookwood was the first big cemetary outside London. It was built to accomodate the ever-increasing numbers of Victorians who needed to be buried, given that London's churchyards were almost full and cremation was illegal. The cemetary even had its own railway service from London ... the Necropolis Railway ... to transport the dead. The site is huge and mostly empty but there is a fascinating corner with overgrown tombs and beautiful examples of Victoiran memorial stonework. This is one such statue. Behind her you can see one of the mausolea.
