Infrared Photograph: Crater

Rock Formation in Azorian Crater

The Azores are volcanic islands, and in many places are still active. In the centre of the island of Faial is a crater, rising 800 metres from the sea. This is possibly a basaltic intrusion, formed as molten rock pushed up through debris in the crater during an eruption.
