Kamakura Buddha

The Great Buddha at Kamakura was cast in 1252 and originally sat inside a temple. In 1498 a tidal wave (tsunami) swept the temple buildings away but left the heavy bronze statue intact and he has sat there, open to the elements, for the past 500 years. Since the village outside Kamakura in which the Buddha stands is a few kilometres inland and up on the side of a hill that must have been an impressive event. The statue is 13.35 metres high and weighs 121 tons.
