Infrared Photograph: Shimoda

Perry Street in Shimoda

Shimoda is a small fishing town at the southern end of the Izu peninsula in Japan. I is where the first American consulate was set up in Japan and where the first trade agreement was signed. The arrival of Commander Perry with his fleet of black ships is commemorated in some of the street names and even on the man-hole covers in the street.
