The Westerkerk from the Prinsengracht
Rembrant is buried at the Westerkerk and it is almost next to the Anne Frank House and Greenpeace's Art Deco fortress HQ. This is my favourite part of Amsterdam and whenever we go over there - usually for a conference each September - we stay in a hotel on the Kiezersgracht near here.
The Westerkerk not only chimes the hours but also has a carrillion which can either play automatically or be played manually. After a trip up the tower - great views over the city of course - we bumped into the man making his way up to play the carrillion. He asked if we had any requests and I opted for Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor.
So we stood outside T'Smalle with a glass of the late lamented Maximillian Trippel in-hand (brewery since gone bust I'm told) and listened to our request played on the Westerkerk tower carrillion. Of course if I had been a true Frank Zappa fan I would have asked for 'Louie Louie' ... but it wouldn't have suited the occasion as well.
