Starting from a photographic quality original, two main options are outlined for making the files smaller. JPEG compression is the international standard for compressing photographic images and is widely used on the Web.
An alternative to JPEG compression is reducing the number of colours (also known as colour or bit depth) in the image. Of course, different displays may have different numbers of colours as well
We have used the abbreviation RGB quite often but you may be unclear as to exactly what it means. This document gives background information on how colours can be formed from red, green and blue.
